“I first discovered the Joya: AIR residency during my first year at the Metropolitan University of Manchester, where I was studying Fine Art for my BA degree. Alongside my artistic practice, my background in biology and ecological conservation projects drew me towards the captivating beauty of the Sierra María-Los Vélez Natural Park where Joya is located. The focus on sustainability and conservation that drives this artist residency resonated deeply with me.

Unfortunately, the annual university-led residency at Joya was canceled due to COVID, so I felt incredibly lucky to be able to come to Joya post-graduation to assist Simon on his project, "Deposition: WiP." This experience opened my eyes to the powerful convergence of art and ecology. Being here has been an enriching journey of discovery, not only for learning invaluable permaculture and eco-restoration techniques but also for delving deeper into the interplay between art and the natural world.

As a 3D artist specializing in ceramics and glass, I found solace in the fact that I couldn't engage in the harmful processes typically associated with these materials, such as firing. Instead, I have embraced the abundant local clay found in the landscape and embarked on experiments using natural materials like tree sap to strengthen the clay without the need for firing, thus ensuring that my pieces remain biodegradable. This respite from traditional processes has allowed me to explore new avenues in my artistic practice.

I am truly grateful for this opportunity to take a step back, allowing inspiration to gently return to me, and to connect with incredible, like-minded artists who share my passion for the convergence of art and ecology. It is a joy to be able to work on this project and give back to this beautiful landscape that has inspired me so deeply”.
